Silk
Cultivated silk is a smooth and continuous strand of
filament. It appears smooth, almost glassy and translucent. The silk
fiber also highlights a slight prismatic, rainbow effect. Cultivated
silk is the finest of all fibers and is derived from natural sources.
Bombyx mori is the most common type of cultivated silkworm, which feeds
on mulberry leaves. These leaves contain very little tannin, and hence
the fibers obtained from these worms are beautifully white. These type
of silk fiber is appropriate for blending, dyeing and spinning. Silk
fibers have little elasticity.
