Douppioni
Silk
Douppioni is a plain-weave fabric with slubbed ribs. It
is a light to medium weight elegant and classy fabric popular for its
nubby texture and shiny streaks. Most suitable for making loose fitting
dress materials. The fabric is generally avoided for making tight
fitting dresses as the fabric cannot withstand stress and ravels easily.
The douppioni silk fabric has a stiff, taffeta-like hand and is
generally dyed in bright colors.

gowns, elegant evening dresses, or semi fitted vests or garments.
Dupioni silk is extensively used for apparels blouses, jackets, suits,
skirts, tops, etc.
The strength and durability of the fabric makes it suitable for making
home furnishing like lightweight draperies. Nicely embroidered and
beaded douppini silk home furnishing helps to impart a refreshing look
to the living room.
Production of Dupioni Silk
The word Dupioni is derived from French "Dupione" that
describes the process whereby double nested cocoons are harvested to
make this type of silk. The fabric is reeled from two silkworms that
spin a cocoon together and thereby produce a double thread. Threads are
generally uneven and irregular. Special types of weaves, such as
shantung and other irregular types, are woven from these types of silk.
The cocoon has characteristic lumps and slubs, but it is known for its
sheen.
Doupioni is also seen in man-made fibers such as polyester, acetate and
referred to as Douppioni.
